Background of the study
This study explores the effect of modern media on the evolution of Nigerian Pidgin within popular culture. Nigerian Pidgin, traditionally an oral lingua franca, has undergone significant transformation with the advent of digital media, television, and social networking platforms (Ibrahim, 2023). Modern media outlets have not only popularized Nigerian Pidgin but have also influenced its linguistic evolution by introducing new vocabulary, idioms, and stylistic trends that reflect contemporary social realities. This research examines how various media formats—ranging from music videos and online content to televised debates—shape the way Nigerian Pidgin is used and perceived. Through content analysis of media productions and interviews with media professionals and linguistic experts, the study investigates the mechanisms of language change induced by digital communication. The findings aim to provide insights into the dynamic interplay between media exposure and language innovation, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges in preserving linguistic identity in a rapidly evolving cultural landscape.

Statement of the problem
Although modern media has greatly increased the visibility of Nigerian Pidgin, it has also contributed to significant changes in its structure and usage that may erode traditional linguistic features (Ibrahim, 2023). The rapid introduction of new terms and stylistic shifts driven by digital trends can lead to a divergence between contemporary usage and historical forms, potentially compromising linguistic heritage. This study seeks to identify the specific impacts of modern media on Nigerian Pidgin’s evolution and assess whether these changes support or undermine its role in popular culture.

Objectives of the study:

To analyze the influence of modern media on Nigerian Pidgin.

To identify linguistic changes associated with media exposure.

To evaluate the implications for cultural and linguistic preservation.

Research questions:

How does modern media influence Nigerian Pidgin usage?

What linguistic innovations have emerged from digital media?

How can traditional forms be preserved amid media-driven change?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the transformative impact of modern media on Nigerian Pidgin, offering insights into language evolution in popular culture. The findings will benefit linguists, media professionals, and cultural preservationists by informing strategies to balance innovation with heritage conservation (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to modern media influences on Nigerian Pidgin in popular culture; excludes formal language education contexts.

Definitions of terms:

Modern media: Digital and broadcast platforms influencing language.

Language evolution: Changes in language over time.

Popular culture: Cultural practices widely accepted in society.
